One-Man Show Benefits High Gear

In a benefit tour-de-force, Alan Jeffries gave a solo performance featuring five famous personalities and his well-known Punk Ballet at Raiders in Sandusky. Mr. Jeffries, also a member of the Cardinal Court, a Sandusky fund raising group, has been a performer in the Greater Cleveland area since 1968.

"I never tried anything like this before. This is my first one man show," commented Jeffries. "Usually performers have one or two special characters that they perform regularly. The idea of variety and a large number of characters that can be interchanged really appeals to me although it creates strategic performance difficulties such as costume and music changes. It is because of these changes that I do my own sound mixing and editing. I feel I have better control over all the elements

necessary to make a good performance. I prefer to use my own voice whenever possible, but again with those changes it is sometimes necessary to use recorded music to control timing."

Jeffries demonstrated an interesting mix of serious illusion and of outstanding comic talent. Jeffries opened with a skit of Philly favorite, Kate Smith and her God Bless. number. As Mae West, Jeffries bantered with the audience and zinged in one-liners. The impression of Gospel singer Della Reese required a great deal of energy because of her down home version of Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey.

Repeating two of Lily Tomlin's most favorite characters, Ernestine the operator and Edith Ann, Mr. Jeffries was at his comic best. As a

finale to the performance, Jeffries repeated his punk ballet. Dressed in a green and yellow tutu and a striped multi-color Afro wig Jeffries managed to stomp across the stage with exaggerated gestures and movements in his interpretive rendition of The Sound of Music.

"I really enjoy comic drag. It's great way to interact with the audience as weii as have a lot of fun yourself," stated Jeffries. "In this performance I decided to do some new characters as well as repeat some of the best received skits from the past."

Las Vegas performers J.J. Van Dyck and Michael Lee were special guests of Jeffries at the performance. Van Dyck and Lee are performing in the Greater Cleveland area.
